Lay Ministry Intensives

What are they?

Lay Ministry Intensives are introductory theological studies aimed specifically at lay people involved in various forms of lay ministry. Four units of study are offered on a two year rotating program, and each unit also includes a focus on the practical skills needed for Preaching and leading Worship. Completing the four units meets the study requirements for Lay Preacher candidates.

Who can attend? He, Qi. Calling Disciples, from Art in the Christian Tradition, a project of the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, Nashville, TN.

When completed these four units satisfy the educational requirements for accreditation as a Lay Preacher, as they incorporate the practices of leading worship and preaching as well as the four Biblical and theological subjects. Each intensive is also suitable for those just wanting to dip a toe into the water of theological study, for those wanting a refresher, for those interested in developing their skills as a worship leader, and for experienced leaders who enjoy exploring the Christian faith with others.

How are they run?

The Intensives are face-to-face gatherings held over two weekends (Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon) separated by about a month. Attendance requires some pre-reading and some follow-up learning done at home. The program is run both centrally at CTM (Parkville) but also regionally. There are a variety of experienced presenters that cater for a range of learning styles. The aim is to create a safe peer learning environment where we learn together by listening and watching, and by doing and reflecting.

Why  come?

I relish the excitement of actually delving into the Bible or thinking seriously about God questions in the company of other curious learners. It opens up a new window of faith that not only feeds your own spiritual journey but that hopefully you can share with others. If you feel called to preach or lead worship it will also give you the skills and confidence to take the first steps towards fulfilling this calling.
