Uphold One Another in Prayer

In response to each baptism, Uniting Church congregations promise to maintain the life of worship and service, and to uphold one another in prayer.

Prayer, however, does not always come easily. There are many ways into prayer, yet, not many are well known or practiced in our tradition. This resource provides a journey into prayer.

Who can join in?
This material is designed to be used in covenant with others, but can also be used by individuals. Congregations, presbyteries, agencies and schools could invite people to join ‘Uphold one another in prayer’ groups. Church councils, elders, small groups, collegial groups, presbytery and synod committees could use the material at the beginning of their meetings.

What is involved?
The material includes a covenant process to be used the first time the group meets and an A4 handout describing a different style of prayer for each month. Groups covenant to uphold one another in prayer over the period of using the material. Each time groups gather, people reflect on the previous month’s prayer style using the process suggested and then practice the coming month’s prayer style.

Where prayer is born
God seeks us and knows us, when we stand and when we sit. The desire in God for relationship with us stirs in us a desire for relationship with God. As God longs for us, and our hearts long for God, prayer is born. Prayer leads into relationship with God, draws us beyond our individuality and shapes the person we are becoming.
