What is Spiritual Direction?

‘To listen another’s soul into a condition of disclosure and discovery may be almost the greatest service thay any human being ever performs for another’ – Douglas Steere
What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual Direction is a ministry in which one person, the spiritual director, helps another person, the directee, become more aware of God’s self-communication in his or her life. Spiritual Direction creates a safe holding space for the development of relationship with God, living out of the gifts of that relationship and growing in discernment. Spiritual direction is a ministry in the Church concerned with facilitating a persons’ growth in intimacy with God which leads into right relationship with all creation. The ministry has a love and revered history in the Chrisitian tradition and has been practiced by lay people, vowed religious and ordained ministers.

Finding a spiritual director
Finding a spiritual director/companion is a prayerful process, one that can take time and discernment. We can pray for a companion and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us into a relationship where there is trust, freedom and energy.

For those seeking a spiritual director/companion, Joan offers a referral service. You can make an appointment for a referral interview with Joan. Joan is linked with the Wellsprings spiritual direction referral team and has access to 60 plus directors. These are men women lay and ordained who have completed accreditied formations programs in Spiritual Direction. They are also receiving Spiritual Direction and supervision themselves. Most of them also attend continuing education programs.
