A Brief Introduction to Schleiermacher’s
Most Important Ideas

A seminar engaging some of Schleiermacher’s key texts with Christine Helmer, Professor of German and Professor of Religious Studies, Northwestern University, Illinois USA

Professor Helmer is a distinguished American Lutheran theologian who is a leading scholar of both Martin Luther and Friedrich Schleiermacher. She is the author of The Trinity and Martin Luther (revised 2017) and the editor of the Christianity section of de Gruyter’s Encyclopaedia of the Bible and Its Reception. Through her 2014 book, Theology and the End of Doctrine, she has become a significant contributor to the lively contemporary debates about the nature and function of Christian doctrine.
