A book to guide arriving at a new placement

Ten Commandments for pastors new to a congregation by Lawrence W Farris

This small book is full of invaluable guidance for anyone starting pastoral ministry in a congregation, whether for the first time or the tenth.

The basic premise is that how one begins in a new placement sets the tone for how the placements unfolds. The ‘commandments’ give guidance about how to get to know the culture of a new placement and what to attend to in the early stages of a placement, including preaching and worship leadership, finances and outside commitments.

While one doesn’t need to follow all the guidance of the author the main idea of thinking intentionally about how to begin in a new placement and having a plan for the early months in a new placement is a good idea and this book provides some excellent places to start.
